INTRODUCTION TO JAW SURGERY:

Jaw surgery involves cutting the jaws and reattaching them in a different position to the craniofacial bones.  The surgery may involve a single jaw, two jaws, and may extend as high as above the eye-sockets in more involved cases.

 

Jaw surgery is not particularly dangerous, but does involve general anesthesia, and may involve some residual numbness of the face.  As such, jaw surgery serves individuals with moderate to severe jaw and face abnormailities. 

 

WHEN IS SURGERY THE BEST OPTION?

Most jaw surgeries are not necessary and not beneficial!  This may surprise you, but it is true.  The following scenarios should help you to determine if jaw surgery is best for you. 

 

I don't like my face and my teeth are way out of position:

 

Jaw Surgery is designed to change the face.  If the patient's face is unusual and requires change, then Jaw Surgery is appropriate.  If the face is "within normal limits," the idea of surgery is questionable. 

 

Why would someone choose surgery if the face is "within normal limits?"  See below.

 

 

I like my face, but my teeth are way out of position:

If your face is reasonably normal, but your teeth are so out of position that you have been told that you "need" a surgery, consider seeing an orthodontist that is particularly reputable in your area.  

 

Orthodontics alone can accomplish ALOT MORE than most people think.  Most orthodontists are not trained in large amounts of tooth movement.  But orthodontists that are extensively trained in such treatments are worth traveling to in order to avoid such a surgery.
